This kind of a capella singing in harmony just gives me happy little goosebumps. The singers are all members of an Islandic band called Arstiðir.  They are singing the 13th century Icelandic hymn “Heyr himna smiður” at the train station in Wuppertal, Germany, on 09/15/2013.

“Heyr, himna smiður” was written by Kolbeinn Tumason in 1208. The music was composed in the 1970s by Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson (1938-2013), one of Iceland’s foremost contemporary composers.

Lyrics:

Heyr, himna smiður,
hvers skáldið biður.
Komi mjúk til mín
miskunnin þín.
Því heit eg á þig,
þú hefur skaptan mig.
Eg er þrællinn þinn,
þú ert drottinn minn.

Guð, heit eg á þig,
að þú græðir mig.
Minnst þú, mildingur, mín,
mest þurfum þín.
Ryð þú, röðla gramur,
ríklyndur og framur,
hölds hverri sorg
úr hjartaborg.

Gæt þú, mildingur, mín,
mest þurfum þín,
helzt hverja stund
á hölda grund.
Send þú, meyjar mögur,
málsefnin fögur,
öll er hjálp af þér,
í hjarta mér.

This was a spontaneous thing they did after they had performed a concert earlier that night, and were still wound up from it.  They have two albums out, but their album music is kind of folky with guitars, cellos, very melodic and listenable.  These guys have some serious musical chops.  I’ve added both their albums to my wish list on Amazon.

Some Feline Halloween.
